NICK CAVE ARRIVES ON TIME
March 5th, 2013

Nick Cave is one of the most important contemporary artists working in America today. He is represented by the Jack Shainman Gallery, and he also is the director of the graduate fashion program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His Soundsuits are meticulously handcrafted from found objects, recycled remnants, and discarded materials. They are both sculptures, and costumes for performance art, as will be the case when Nick Cave’s horse will walk among hurried commuters of New York.

Heard-NY has been executed by Creative Time, a leading public art organization in New York. In this case, Creative Time has partnered with Art for Transit, the group that places the work of artists such as Doug and Mike Starn, Tom Otterness, and Leo Villareal in Subway stations around the city.

A TALE OF TWO CHELSEAS

The times they are a-changing in Chelsea. Hauser & Wirth recently opened a second New York location, in the structure that used to house the Roxy Roller-Rink. David Zwirner Gallery, long a resident of West 19th Street, have doubled their footprint by adding a large space on West 20th Street. Pace Gallery now have 4 locations in Chelsea.

The robust gallery scene, and the High Line elevated park, have created a thriving neighborhood out of this once desolate corner of Manhattan. However, smaller and mid-sized galleries are not feeling the same attraction to New York’s blue chip art district. Postmasters Gallery, which moved to Chelsea from Soho 15 years ago, is facing a rent increase that will require $30,000 per month. While they plan to move south, gallerist Sean Kelly has moved North to make way for a condo tower where his gallery once stood.

“You won’t find much experimentation if the rents continue to escalate, because those kinds of galleries won’t be here,” said Chelsea gallerist Casey Kaplan, speaking to Bloomberg. “They’ll be priced out.”

The 2013 edition of The Armory Show in New York marks the one hundredth anniversary of the exhibition that shook the American art-viewing public from its stupor, like an axe through the frozen sea. It was called the International Exhibition of Modern Art, and it opened at the 69th Regiment Armory on East 26th Street on February 17th, 2013.

This break from the past was delivered via the avant-garde creations of European modernist such as Constantin Brancusi, Henri Matisse, and of course Marcel Duchamp, whose “Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2.” is so closely associated with the Armory Show in the collective memory.

For the centenary edition, Eric Shiner of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh will curate a special section entitled Armory Focus: USA. Shiner proposes that “One hundred years after the avant-garde made its American debut at the 1913 Armory, today we must ask what, if anything, is new, shocking, or revolutionary.”

Long ago, art fairs such as The Armory Show ceased to be the source of shock, and are now firmly entrenched in the establishment of contemporary art. The task of presenting the New New Thing in art usually falls to the satellite fairs that dot the city during Armory week. “The Independent” is a fair that consistently delivers a high-quality art viewing experience, unique among fairs in that it eschews small trade-show booths in favor of an open-concept fair without walls..

GUTAI RETURNS TO NEW YORK

Reflecting upon art of the 20th century is the theme this season at New York’s major museums. For the second time in six months, there is a survey of the post-war Japanese art movement Gutai. Currently on view at the Guggenheim museum, “Gutai: Splendid Playground,” 30 works in every possible medium fill Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous space, including participatory art that visitors can affect and alter.

During the autumn of 2012, Hauser & Wirth presented a survey of the movement at their New York gallery entitled “A Visual Essay on Gutai.” Gutai’s first U.S. exhibition was presented in New York City in September 1958 at the Martha Jackson Gallery at 32 East 69th Street – in the townhouse now occupied by Hauser & Wirth New York.

Gutai slogans such as ‘Don’t imitate others!’ and ‘Engage in the newness!’ tell how the artists sought to disengage from the conventions of art history and perhaps the sins of the father as well.

The works on view at the Guggenheim are generally relaxed and even fun-loving. Cheerful art as a response to the devastation of World War II is part of the narrative of Japanese art, which continues to this day with artists such as MR. and Takashi Murakami.

This indigenous art movement complements and builds upon Western trends in art history such as Futurism, Dada, and Fluxus. It ebbed and flowed for eighteen years from 1954 to 1972, ending with the death of Jiro Yoshihara, the central figure of the group. It was Yoshihara that penned The Gutai Art Manifesto in 1956, proclaiming: “We shall hope that there is always a fresh spirit in our Gutai exhibitions.”

The works seem as fresh and current as when they were created decades ago.

Gutai: Splendid Playground is on view until May 8th.

EL ANATSUI MOVES TO BROOKLYN

Mere weeks after El Anatsui presented a new body of work at Jack Shainman Gallery in Chelsea, the Nigeria-based sculpture has moved across the East River, and set-up shop at the Brooklyn Museum.

Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui is the first solo exhibition in a New York museum by the artist. The show will features over 30 works that transform humble materials such as metal and wood into magical sculptures. Most notable in his oeuvre are the metal wall works resembling tapestries, that are created using the caps and collars from liquor bottles.

For his large, public installations such as “Broken Bridge II,” which is now on view in Chelsea, Anatsui has incorporated additional materials while retaining the spirit of the wall-hanging sculptures for which he is so well known. Later this year, he will be presenting more outdoor installations in London and Amsterdam.

TRACEY EMIN ON THE GREAT WHITE WAY

Throughout the month of February, 40 screens across Times Square will fade from advertizing into art. For a span of three minutes each night before midnight, the artwork of British sculptor Tracey Emin will reveal six messages in the “Crossroads of the World.” These pronouncements of unrequited love by Emin are now a staple of art fairs and museums worldwide, and in this case the works are not made of neon tubes, but rather digital animations that were commissioned by s[edition], the online platform that offers limited editions (complete with certificate of ownership) that exist only in a digital format. For Robert Norton, CEO of s[edition], “this is a pivotal moment for the awareness and appreciation of art in digital format.”

This presentation of Emin’s iconic neon works is part of “Midnight Moments,” a larger series by Times Square Arts, the public art program of the Times Square Alliance. Previous projects were realized by Yoko Ono, Taxiplasm and Jonathan Henry.

Tracey Emin first rose to prominence as a member of the Young British Artists (YBAs) movement in the 1990s. Her intensely autobiographical installations have drawn praise and condemnation in equal parts. Notable works include a tent pasted with the names of her lovers entitled Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995, which was featured in Charles Saatchi’s seminal YBA exhibition “Sensation.” She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 for My Bed, which was comprised of sullied sheets, clothes, cigarettes, and other detritus. In recent years, controversy has given way to respect, as works decried as shock art have stood the test of time.

The art market was front page news on the New York Times this week, with the recurring theme of whether more regulation is needed. The same publication started off the new year with “Invitation to a Dialogue: An Art Market Bubble?”

It would seem as if an art market that allows opaque transactions and has few outside monitors can’t enjoy this elite status forever. Art sales in New York, at galleries or at auction, are estimated at $8 billion a year. Several sales techniques were targeted by the author, including chandelier bidding and third party guarantees at auctions, and the lack of price disclosure at galleries.

Several very public legal actions against the Gagosian Gallery and Knoedler & Company have raised eyebrows over unscrupulous practices that were made public by those lawsuits.

According to Michael Plummer of Artvest, it is unlikely that the markets are going to have the discipline to self-regulate.

While the 1% and their beautiful trophies continue to be a target for public scrutiny and condemnation, market forces may be adding insult to injury. According to the Mei Moses index of art prices, art valuations are in decline and for the first time in years, equities are out-performing art as an investment. Whether this is a temporary correction or a structural change, only time will tell.

The Barclays Center Arena, home to the Brooklyn Nets NBA franchise, has had a hard landing since doors opened
in the autumn of 2012. Construction of the facility was delayed due to lawsuits filed by angry neighbors, and the Nets are not enjoying a winning season so far.

However, the facility gets high marks for its art program. This week marks the unveiling of the massive site-specific mural Diary of Brooklyn by the local artist Jose Parla. The mural is part of a larger body of work commissioned by the Barclays Center, including a similarly-sized mural by fellow Brooklyn-based artist Mickalene Thomas. Perhaps the commission was granted on the recommendation of Nets part-owner Jay-Z, who collects Parla’s work.

The mural measures 10 feet by 70 feet, and is executed in the gestural calligraphy of Parla’s mixed-media canvases, combining the mediums of acrylic, ink, oil, plaster, and enamel on wood.

It has been a busy couple of months for the artist. At Art Basel Miami Beach, he premiered a short film and catalogue that documented Wrinkles in the City, his collaboration with the French artist JR.

From February 8th to March 28th, he will present a exhibition of new work at Haunch of Venison in London.
José Parlá: Broken Languages will feature paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculptures.

Jose Parla is represented by the Chelsea art gallery Bryce Wolkowitz, and also shows at OH WOW gallery
in Los Angeles.

EL ANATSUI OVER NEW YORK

As the year comes to an end, New York City is unseasonably warm. Instead of snow, the work of the African master El Anatsui is begun to cover New York. Tourists walking along the High Line will notice a monumental wall sculpture made of tin in a language that is uniquely El Anatsui’s. The artist takes the caps and collars off of liquor bottles, and pounds them flat. Once they are tied together, a stunning visual effect results that resembles gold leaf, traditional African garments, chain mail, and a loomed tapestry. “Broken Bridge II” was unveiled in November, part of the High Line Art program that has included commissions by Sarah Sze, John Balessari, JR, and others.

Below the High Line on 20th street, inside Jack Shainman gallery in Chelsea, a show of new works by Anatsui opens on Friday December 14th. “Pot of Wisdom” is the third solo show for the Nigeria-based artist.

In the new year, a solo museum exhibition called Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui will open at the Brooklyn Museum, running from February 8th to August 4th.

Art lovers who travelled to Miami could not escape the long shadow of Anatsui. Two small wall sculptures were featured at the Shainman booth at the Art Basel. Strong works by Hank Willis Thomas and Nick Cave were also included.

Mickalene Thomas in two boroughs

Not even Hurricane Sandy can stop the meteoric rise of the Brooklyn-based artist Mickalene Thomas. After a delay due to the superstorm, she has a show of new work opening simultaneously tonight at both Lehmann Maupin locations in Manhattan.

Mickalene is the rare artist that enjoys widespread popularity, as well as curatorial and critical praise. She also enjoys several celebrity collectors, including and P. Diddy, Beyonce and Jay-Z, who may have had role in hiring her (along with Jose Parla) to create murals for the Barclay Center, home of Jay-Z’s Brooklyn Nets.

Across the East River from Lehmann Maupin’s Lower East Side gallery, Mickalene’s museum show “Mickalene Thomas: Origin of the Universe” is on view at the Brooklyn Museum until the end of January. The exhibition includes
a short film about her mother, installation, photography, and the iconic rhinestone and enamel paintings for which she
