The 18th Biennale of Sydney
July 9, 2012
SYDNEY—The 18th Biennale of Sydney opened June 27 at five separate sites throughout the city. Running until September 16th, the event celebrates the communal aspects of art; sewing, story-telling, music-making, and basket-weaving feature prominently at this year’s exhibition, entitled “All Our Relations.”
“Humanity is in need of a renewed attention to how we relate to each other and to the world we inhabit,” explain this year’s curators, Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster. “We tend to forget how small acts in our daily life can influence the larger whole and thus destroy or recreate a greater harmony between the spheres.” The Biennale explores the impact of such small acts through works like Lee Mingwei’s The Mending Project. The artwork encourages visitors to bring clothes in need of repair, which Mingwei then tailors with brightly colored threads. At another site, Tiffany Singh’s Knock on the Sky, Listen to the Sound also invites public collaboration. The installation allows visitors to take home, decorate, and return one of several hundred brightly threaded wind chimes.
The Biennale expects to attract over 500,000 visitors throughout the course of the summer.
