Ruscha Resigns
July 23, 2012
LOS ANGELES—Ed Ruscha, MOCA’s only remaining artist-trustee, resigned from the Museum’s board of trustees last week. Like John Baldessari, Catherine Opie and Barbara Kruger, who have also left the board, Ruscha takes issue with the museum’s new pop-culture focus. Moreover, the recent ouster of curator Paul Schimmel likely influenced Ruscha’s decision; Schimmel is widely respected for his intellectually vigorous programming.
In a brief email to Museum Director Jeffrey Deitch, Ruscha wrote, “I hereby submit my resignation from the position I occupy on the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Board of Trustees. My defection may look obvious, but it will be all the better for the museum, which is on a course different than I imagined, but one I hope to support in the future.”
