Hockney v Hirst
January 1, 2012

LONDON—Posters for David Hockney’s new show at the Royal Academy of Arts in London reading “All the works here were made by the artist himself, personally” is a confirmed jab for notoriously hands-off Damien Hirst (and maybe Contemporary art).

Hockney, who was recently awarded the Order of Merit has been an internationally renowned painter since he broke into British pop art scene in the 1960s, and is probably still best known for his paintings based on California with visions of ranch homes, pools, and sunlight.

Hockney’s criticism came in response to Hirst employing assistants to paint his “spot paintings” for his 11 upcoming Gagosian shows. When talking about his painting assistants in 2007, he simply said: ” They were better at it than me. I get bored. I get very impatient.”
