ANISH KAPOOR CANCELS SHOW IN CHINA IN SUPPORT OF AI WEIWEI
JUNE 14, 2011

LONDON — Britain-based sculptor and artist Anish Kapoor has decided to cancel plans to show his work at the National Museum of China in Beijing in protest of the continuing detention of Ai Weiwei. Mr. Ai has been held by the Chinese government in an undisclosed location for two months. Officials have said that they are detaining the artist while investigating tax evasion charges against a company he controls.

The British Council had asked Kapoor to exhibit his work at the National Museum of China as part of the “UK Now” festival that will take place in late 2012.

Kapoor has voiced his criticism of Ai Weiwei’s detention frequently since the artist’s arrest. He also dedicated a recent work in Paris — Leviathan, pictured above — to Mr. Ai, calling his incarceration “barbaric.”
